AI in Commercial Space & Aviation

Is the decline of deep reading undermining the very foundation of AI innovation? A new Nature review warns that the public’s shift from complex, narrative-driven nonfiction to fragmented content correlates with a drop in critical thinking — and that this trend is directly impacting how we design, regulate, and understand artificial intelligence. In 2019, popular-science book sales peaked at 5 million; by 2024, they had fallen to 2.9 million, spread across 20,000 titles — a sign of both oversaturation and diminishing depth. As AI systems grow more powerful, their ability to reason, predict, and act ethically depends on the cognitive habits we’re losing: patience, focus, and the capacity to follow a complex argument. The real bottleneck in AI isn’t hardware — it’s the human mind. This insight comes from a recent article in Nature, which examines how the erosion of deep reading threatens not just culture, but the future of technology itself.
