AI Safety, Ethics & Governance

Can AI actually make weather forecasts more reliable beyond two weeks? A new MIT study shows a machine-learning model doubled forecasting accuracy for subseasonal events—beating climatological averages for the first time. The model, called Probabilistic Bias Correction (PBC), doesn't replace existing forecasts but learns from their errors in real time, improving predictions of extreme weather like storms and cold snaps. This isn't just a technical win—it’s a paradigm shift for AI safety: systems that correct their own flaws are more trustworthy. The research was published in Nature and tested against the world’s best forecasting model, the ECMWF. For AI ethics and governance, this proves that adaptive, self-correcting systems are not only possible but essential for high-risk domains. The model is open-source and low-cost, making it globally accessible. This is how AI safety evolves: not through rigid rules, but through intelligent, iterative correction.
