What if AI climate models are overestimating forest carbon capture? A new experiment in the Amazon — AmazonFACE — is testing whether trees store more carbon as CO2 rises, or simply leak it back into the atmosphere. The project simulates 620 p.p.m. CO2, a future scenario, to see if increased photosynthesis translates into lasting carbon storage. Early evidence from temperate forests suggests not — and the Amazon may face similar limits due to phosphorus-poor soils. This has direct implications for AI safety: climate AI must account for hidden biological feedbacks, not just atmospheric inputs. If models ignore soil constraints, they risk generating false confidence in carbon drawdown. The real test isn't in code — it's in the forest.
