What if AI safety is modeled on a flawed biological assumption? A new study in Nature reveals that chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans maintain brain volume into old age — unlike humans, who begin losing mass at 45–50. This evolutionary divergence suggests that neural aging isn’t universal. For AI safety, ethics, and governance, this means we may be designing systems around a human-centric model of decline that doesn’t apply to all cognitive architectures. If we assume all complex systems degrade over time, we may build in unnecessary failure modes.
