AI in Higher Education
2026-09-07
🏆 26.8% of America's Colleges and Universities are in just three states—California, Florida, and New York—according to ALEX Intelligence’s 2026 data report. This concentration shapes where AI in higher education is developed, tested, and scaled. The top three states host the overwhelming majority of elite research institutions, venture capital, and AI innovation ecosystems, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of advancement. Meanwhile, states like Missouri, Ohio, and Georgia—despite strong public universities—face systemic disadvantages in AI access due to lower institutional density and weaker private-sector support. This is not a technological gap; it’s a geographic one. The future of AI in education is not being built everywhere—it’s being built in three places. This raises urgent questions: Can open-source tools bridge this divide? Or will AI in higher education deepen regional inequality?
