Could a genetic switch in sterile flies double the efficiency of pest eradication? That’s exactly what USDA researchers have achieved with NovoFly™, an all-male screwworm strain. This new development increases production efficiency by 100%—doubling the number of sterile males available for release. The breakthrough comes from the Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory in Kerrville, TX, led by Kim Lohmeyer and Alex Arp. Their work is part of a larger initiative under the New World Screwworm Grand Challenge to protect livestock across the U.S., Mexico, and Central America.
